Hard to believe I actually loved a textbook. They tend to be bbland by nature but this one kept me interested. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.

Hirsch walks you confidently through this fascinating story, educating and informing at all times, while also making links to happenings in the wider world outside photography. Professional photographers and advanced students seeking to increase their skills will discover modern and classic methods of creating and manipulating images. But the material within it is useful and interesting. Taking both a conceptual and pragmatic approach, the book avoids getting bogged down in complex, ever-changing technological matters, allowing it to stay fresh and engaging.

It gave a great overview of not just the history of photography itself, but how photography affected culture and society as well as how what goes on in the world affects photography. Above all this complete reference provides encouragement, inspiration and a compendium of the many possible possibilities and styles to pursue and discover. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Written in an accessible style, it is perfect for students newly engaging with the practice of photography and for experienced photographers wanting to contextualize their own work.

It was for my Photo History class so I didn't actually read the whole thing, just a couple chapters to have a broad idea of the photography development over the rears. It takes waaaaay too long and way too many words to get the point across.

As such, anyone interested in why the world around us is the way it is, could certainly learn something in this book and thus it's easy to recommend. It felt out of place after such a dense analysis of photo history.

Impossible to carry around. But this book was so interesting and well-written that I read every word! This title covers production values, and rare and unusual prints.
